Mini-Con FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the annual Conference now called a Mini-Con?

CRW has rebranded to Mini-Con to better reflect the event’s current structure. In the past, we offered optional services, most for an extra charge, writing critiques by experts and headshots by a photographer. These were offered during lunch and workshop time. While we might consider adding these again in the future, for now, we are focusing on what has been of the most value to our attendees based upon post-event evaluations. Those are the workshops and the time to connect with other writers. The Mini-Con provides the same amount of workshop time as in the past, though perhaps structured differently. Attendees can expect the same quality of workshops with accomplished presenters and a variety of topics.

When is the Castle Rock Writers Mini-Con held?

Traditionally, CRW has held our annual event, whether Conference or now Mini-Con, in the fall on a Saturday. The last three years, it has occurred on a Saturday in August. The Mini-Con Team takes into account other events and major regional conferences are scheduled when selecting a date.

How is the Mini-Con organized?

When selecting faculty, our team looks for people with a variety of experience and knowledge on topics related to poetry and prose, as well as other topics relevant to creatives. For our core workshops, we ask the faculty members to design workshops that include craft information, interaction, and an opportunity to apply these in their writing. Poets and prose writers are provided with workshops of equal time. We may include a general interest panel or general interest afternoon session that brings all writers together.

Where is the Mini-Con held?

Historically, the annual event has been held in Douglas County at a venue that is accessible to regional writers. The venue selection can be challenge based upon availability. Venue cost has been our highest expense. During the pandemic, we pivoted to an online event but did not miss a year. Since that time, our annual event went back to in-person and has been at the Lone Tree Hub, 8827 Lone Tree Parkway, Lone Tree, CO 80124.

Past venues have included the Philip S. Miller Library, the Douglas County Events Center, PACE in Parker, a Douglas County high school, and New Hope Presbyterian Church (Castle Rock).

Is lunch available at the Mini-Con?

Yes. Attendees may order a lunch with registration for an additional cost. While CRW tries to provide a gluten-friendly and a vegetarian option, if you have food allergies, you are encouraged to bring your lunch. CRW offers snacks and hot drinks in the morning at no additional charge.

Are scholarships available?

Scholarships are available on a limited basis and handled confidentially. Use the “Contact Us” link and put “financial need request” in the note.

May youth attend the Mini-Con or Monthly Workshops?

Our events are designed for writers 18 and above. Workshops may include sharing personal writing. We neither censor nor direct what writers choose to share. If you are a high school senior and want to attend, go to the “Contact Us link, indicate your interest and age to see if you qualify for a release with parental consent.

What are the weather and cancellations policies?

In case of extreme weather, dangerous conditions, or other events beyond our control, the annual event will be rescheduled. Registrants and speakers will receive email notifications if it is postponed or cancelled. Registration payments will be applied to the rescheduled event. Those unable to attend the rescheduled event will receive a credit toward the following year’s annual event. CRW seldom issues refunds, due to the unrecouped expenses involved in putting on a conference.

Does CRW take photos at its events?

Yes, the CRW Team takes photographs at its events to show some of the speakers, registrants, and workshops in progress. Those images may be used in future promotional materials. By registering, attendees are granting CRW permission to use any photographs and recordings procured at the event, in any and all print and electronic media (e.g. website, print, and promotional material and any derivations thereof, now or in the future). Your name may be used to identify photographs, audio clips, video clips, statements, etc. Attendees may opt out of being included in photographs by letting a team member know of this choice.

How do I become a presenter at the annual event or other workshop?

Go to the “Contact Us” link to request an application.
